++ Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong said that President Enrique Peña Nieto ordered the dismissal of Consumer Protection Agency Humberto Benítez Treviño… The dismissal came in the wake of a scandal involving Benítez Treviño’s daughter who went to a restaurant in Polanco and after she was denied the table she wanted, tried to have the venue closed down by inspectors.
 In other information, Osorio Chong said security measures for Michoacán will be announced on Thursday.

PAN senators proposed that the army should be sent to Michoacán because the situation there is out of control and the federal government needs to take over. PAN senators said that many towns in Michoacán are currently no man’s land and/or in the power of drug traffickers.

Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong announced early Sunday morning that because the Popocateptl volcano is showing more activity the warning stage was upgraded from Yellow Phase 2 ro Yellow Phase 3.

The National Defense Secretariat deployed 2,000 military troops to help residents of nearby towns who might be affected if the Popocatéptl volcano erupts or activity such as spewing out smoke, ash and volcanic material increases to dangerous levels… The Defense Secretariat said that up to 11,000 people might have to be evacuated from areas near the volcano…

+ + The government of the State of Mexico informed  20 people dead, 33 injured and 45 houses damaged, is the balance of the explosion of a gas pipe in the Mexico-Pachuca, .

They explained that ten of those killed are children and the driver of the pipe is under arrest in a hospital.

++ President Enrique Peña Nieto sent a message of solidarity to the relatives of the victims of the blast.

++ Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong said that Mexico’s northeastern area has the full backing of the federal government to bring back tranquility to Nuevo León, Coahuila and San Luis Potosí but especially Tamaulipas so that peace can return.

++ The deputy head of legal affairs and international affairs at the Attorney General’s Office, Mariana Benítez Tiburcio said that coordination is necessary among authorities to give back tranquility to regions of the country that have lost it.

After their meeting both leaders offered a joint press conference in which they emphasized the importance of acting against transnational organization crime, illegal financial flows and arms trafficking.

++ Members of the Guerrero Popular Movement damaged government buildings and the state congress during their protests on May 1, Workers Day in Chilpancingo.

++ As he presented his second government report Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre reiterated his willingness to hold dialogue with dissident teachers but said that arrest warrants issued against them will be carried out.

New Chicago Council Survey Finds American Opinion of Mexico Mixed







April 29, 2013 CHICAGO - In advance of President Obama’s visit to Mexico later this week, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, in conjunction with The Woodrow Wilson Center, today released a public opinion survey brief on Americans’ views toward Mexico. Findings show Americans’ overall views of Mexico are at their lowest point ever in Chicago Council Surveys dating back to 1994. It also finds relatively few Americans are aware that Mexico is one of our top trading partners.
At the same time, however, a majority of Americans still say that ties with Mexico are important and consider Mexico an economic partner (versus rival). Taken together, the results suggest that increased public awareness of bilateral endeavors could boost support for increased economic and energy integration in the future.

++Scores of journalists marched to the offices of the Interior Secretariat and to the Veracruz Government office in Mexico City to demand of federal authorities that they increase security for and guarantee the safety of journalists in Veracruz. A similar march took place in Veracruz state capital Xalapa and other cities. Marches occurred one year after the murder of Regina Martínez, a Proceso reporter killed in her home in Xalapa.

++ Students from the Ayotzinapa teacher training college and dissident teachers from Chilpancingo marched on the Autopista del Sol highway to protest over the release from prison of two investigative police agents who shot and killed two Ayotzinapa students on December 12, 2011 during a protest on the highway.

The protesters used slingshots to smash windows with rocks when they passed by the National Teachers Union Section 14 building.

++Gonzalo Juarez, leader of the dissident teachers of Guerrero, said their protests now will be extreme and there will be surprises for the state government authorities.

Formerly they blocked the Autopista del Sol Highway in both directions, in the diverting point to the airport of Acapulco to pressure the state congress to dictaminate their proposal to the State Educational Law.
++Elementary Education Teachers from the Rural School “Vasco de Quiroga” of Tiripetío, Michoacán, closed for more than two hours the exit to Pátzcuaro as a part of their demand of automatic places and in rejection of the Educative Reform.
